Our English department enjoys excellent facilities which are situated in a suite of rooms, adjacent to the Learning Resources Centre and the Drama Studio. We have a team of fourteen English specialists, with a very strong, supportive team ethic and wide experience and expertise in teaching language, literature, media and drama.
The department is well equipped with interactive whiteboards and data projectors and also has full access to our state of the art Learning Resources Centre, which supports the department's use of ICT resources. In addition, a purpose-built Drama Studio with full lighting rig provides an excellent environment for educational drama and productions.
Key Stage 3 students are taught in mixed ability groups in Year 7 and setted groups in Year 8. Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 follow GCSE courses in English Language, English Literature and Media. Examination results are outstanding and well above the national average. In the Sixth Form, we offer a comprehensive range of hugely popular A Level courses and many students take both English Language and English Literature. The use of ICT is at the forefront of our planning for promoting an enthusiastic interest in the production of innovative work in new areas.
We work to encourage students to extend and strengthen their talents beyond the classroom in areas such as: writing, acting and public-speaking. A high priority is placed on performance and creative ability and there are strong links with music and art. We also have a tradition of encouraging students to have direct contact with local and nationally-acclaimed novelists, poets and journalists and two of our students have won first prize and runner-up in the Leeds Peace Poetry competition.
