          Principal's Welcome

          Welcome to Woodkirk Academy's website.

On behalf of the Governing Board, staff and students I would like to welcome you to Woodkirk Academy’s website.

Woodkirk Academy is a popular, successful and oversubscribed school where we have a very proud record in academic, intellectual, social, musical, sporting and community developments.

Woodkirk Academy is committed to developing the ‘whole’ person and this has been externally recognised over the years by a number of other bodies such as the Sportsmark Award, Advanced Healthy Schools Status, Investors in People (Gold) and the Stephen Lawrence Award.  We believe that a first class education begins with an assurance of exemplary safety and security and we work very hard to establish this.  Under behaviour and safety, our most recent Ofsted inspection (November 2013) at Woodkirk noted that ‘The quality of pastoral care and welfare arrangements is outstanding.  Students indicate that they always feel safe in the school.’

We pride ourselves on being a caring community with a positive ethos and a strong sense of purpose, order and control.  We have an enviable reputation for being a happy, well ordered community offering a wide variety of educational experiences for all students.  Supportive and warm relationships, underpinned by outstanding discipline, enhance the positive atmosphere within the Academy.

The heart of our success is the high quality of classroom teaching.  Our students are well motivated, with established work habits.  We have high expectations in all aspects of their work and behaviour.  Woodkirk Academy has a strong team approach in all its endeavours, with a tremendously hardworking and dedicated staff whose energies are devoted to providing the best opportunities for all students in the school. As such, examination performance in 2016 was the highest ever seen at Woodkirk; 82% of students attained 5 A*-C including English and Mathematics, ranking the Academy first in Leeds.  In addition, students made excellent progress during their time at the school with all grades awarded, on average, almost half a grade higher than students nationally with the same starting points.  Ofsted noted that ‘Across the school, teachers are very conscientious and highly committed.  They create excellent relationships in lessons so that students enjoy their learning.’

A key strength of our school is our excellent Sixth Form.  Our students will, most likely, be at Woodkirk Academy for seven years and the school will prove to be one of the most important and formative influences in their life.  It is vital they receive a first-class education in a stimulating environment and that you feel you are fully involved in the educational process and our Sixth Form offers such an experience. The pass rate for 2016 was 99%, with 52% of grades awarded at A*-B.  We are also delighted that our Year 13 students go on to study a wide variety of courses in higher and further education or secure employment of their choice due to the superb education they received at Woodkirk Academy.

Our work in Careers, Work Experience, Outdoor Pursuits, Community Projects, Field Trips and Foreign Travel are recognised as being second to none.  As a member of Leodis Academies Trust, we have formalised partnership arrangements with East Ardsley, Hill Top and Westerton Primary Academies which support the transition process for all students from Year 6 to secondary school.  We also have a number of effective links with partner schools both locally and further afield.  The successes of our musical and drama productions are well known, as is our reputation for exceptional sporting achievements, fair play and the sheer joy of physical activity and games.  The school has an excellent record of achieving a balance between academic and non-academic activities.

We aim to provide an outstanding education to all our students and this remains our first priority at all times.  As part of our commitment, we have undertaken several refurbishment projects since becoming an Academy, as well as installing a new state of the art 3G sports facility.   This has given us a first rate Sixth Form facility, together with new and improved Design Technology and Business Study areas and classrooms.  In addition, we have a large Construction facility which offers students a specialist work-related programme, allowing them to develop their technological and vocational skills, have suited subjects together to allow student to learn in specialist environments and have a spacious Learning Resources Centre which provides an excellent study space for all students both through and beyond the school day.

We have a committed and supportive Board of Trustees and Local Governing Board, a well-qualified, experienced and enthusiastic staff and an active Friends’ of the School Association. We aim to maintain harmonious and fruitful relationships between students, home, and school.  Information Evenings, Parents' Evenings and celebration events are all genuine attempts to strengthen links between home and school and to support your child.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any further information about the school or if you would like to visit us and see us in ‘action’.
