Careers and IAG (Information, Advice and Guidance) are integral to our vision of ‘Shaping Young Lives.’
We have dedicated careers staff who oversee the guidance and arrange work experience and other enrichment opportunities, including guest speakers from a whole array of professions and sectors. Students can make appointments with the Careers Officer to discuss their options and opportunities. Parents are welcome to attend these if they wish.
IAG is also apparent across all areas of the curriculum. To find out about how careers is delivered through the different subjects please select the 'Department Careers Information' section on the left hand side of this page.
Woodkirk Academy is also proud to be involved in the Enterprise Advisor Scheme.
Woodkirk has a thriving STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) group for GCSE students interested in careers in these subjects. Visiting speakers have covered topics as varied as industrial chemistry, the design and manufacture of flood defences and parasitology. Students have met engineers from the University of Houston, visited the National Space Centre and completed workshops in smartphone app design. Over 40 students have completed a research project into the electrochemistry of chillies and presented their findings to academics at the University of Oxford.
The Sixth Form team offers a fully developed support system for UCAS and apprenticeship applications and can advise on other possible options such as gap year etc.
Information, Advice and Guidance is relevant to all year groups.
Students from Years 7, 8, 9 10 and 12 have recently visited Cambridge University with the aim of raising aspirations. We are also continually building up further links with Universities and apprenticeship advisors so that whichever path your son/daughter decides to take, they will have received sufficient support and advice in their chosen area.
