Streetwise Encourages Year 7 To ‘Think!’

WOODKIRK ACADEMY ENCOURAGES YEAR 7 TO ‘THINK!’ ABOUT ROAD SAFETY

Safer Roads

Children under the age of 16 are one of the most vulnerable road users, in particular child pedestrians. They account for the majority of child casualties across all road user types. In contrast to older pedestrians, child pedestrians are not experienced about using the road. They are, therefore, particularly vulnerable to injuries and accidents.

In 2014, there were 16,727 road casualties amongst 0-15 yr old children with 1,457 resulting from pedestrian casualties. The highest proportion of these casualties occurred amongst the 12 to 15 year old bracket.

On Tues 29 February, in conjunction with Safer Roads West Yorkshire and Think!, Woodkirk Academy was pleased to welcome into school ‘Streetwise’, a theatre group who had a specific aim of educating Yr7 students about the risks associated with being a young pedestrian.

Nearly 300 students were entertained for one hour by a cast of three who had some interesting ways in which to get their message across in a fun, imaginative but serious way. “I really enjoyed it, it was funny,” said one Yr7 student. There were follow-up activities which were more thought-provoking and encouraged students to consider how to be a safe pedestrian.
